Indian Yellow Pigment Locket

from $145.00

My handcrafted shaker lockets are filled with fine artist pigments. Each locket measures about 13mm wide and 22mm tall including the bail.

INDIAN YELLOW is a yellow pigment originally from India, the production of which has now been outlawed. This pigment sample is a simulated imitation of the original, and you’ll probably be glad when you learn how the original version was made. In a practice dating back to at least the 16th century but possibly earlier, cows were denied water and fed only mango leaves. This led to their urine being quite thick and potent, which would be collected and dried until only crystals remained. The resulting powder would then be made into a paint prized for its luminosity and fluorescent qualities, most notably being used in Van Gogh’s painting The Starry Night. The practice was banned in 1908 and since then a synthetic version was created which has the same beautiful qualities, without the animal abuse.

Handcrafted to order, please allow up to 8 weeks for your pigment jewelry to be made.

You can add chains or earring findings here if desired. Make sure to get two lockets if you plan to have a pair of earrings made.

Note: I can make these lockets with any material inside. Contact me if you would like a different pigment used. If you have your own object (other than pigment) that you would like put in a locket, please reach out here.
