Cochineal Pigment Locket
Cochineal Pigment Locket
My handcrafted shaker lockets are filled with fine artist pigments. Each locket measures about 13mm wide and 22mm tall including the bail.
COCHINEAL is a red or magenta dye pigment made from real insects. Its first known use as a dye dates to the 2nd century by the Maya, Aztecs, and other indigenous groups in Mesoamerica. The insect is native to prickly pear cacti and became a commodity during the Spanish conquest, spreading it across the globe — but its roots are in Central America. These specific cochineal insects hail from Mexico and, if ground into a powder and blended with boiling water, create a vibrant dye that can be used on textiles or in fine art.
Handcrafted to order, please allow up to 8 weeks for your pigment jewelry to be made.
You can add chains or earring findings here if desired. Make sure to get two lockets if you plan to have a pair of earrings made.
Note: I can make these lockets with any material inside. Contact me if you would like a different pigment used. If you have your own object (other than pigment) that you would like put in a locket, please reach out here.
